The Digital Divide

  1. In a world of ever growing interweb usage, we have to take a serious look at the Digital Divide.
  2. Above is a very interesting study of the Digital Divide in Canada.
  3. In Canada, we’re doing what we can to help with the various degrees of the Digital Divide.
  4. One of the important things we learnt was the value of Closed Captioning in videos users and business’s upload to help those who have hearing impairment issues…
  5. Here is an old video of me… walking into a protest during the g20 debacle of toronto, I added ‘CC’ to it. I was having issues with Youtubes automated placement of the closed captions, so i added the timecode myself.
  6. While doing research this epic division, I stumbled across a Ted Talk by Aleph Molinari about bridging the gap.
  7. TEDxSanMigueldeAllende – Aleph Molinari – Bridging the Digital Divide
  8. “the only thing that can change and break the poverty cycle is education, and we can use these technologies to bring education to these communities” He goes on to say that technology will not save the world, but human energy.
  9. The discussion in class then extrapolated into open Universities and the importance of open access to help bridge this Divide. I have compiled a list these universities, where it is free to learn. As it should be.
  10. Im still finding more. But the result of all this makes me question…. What the heck am i doing at Ryerson?
